BENHAM BROS: The Purpose of Exposing Sin – It’s Good News!

(Via WND.com) – When God exposes sin it’s meant for restoration, not destruction. Unfortunately today, the spirit behind exposing the sins of others, especially powerful men, is often meant for the destruction of their careers, not the restoration of their souls.

This nation needs restoration. Families need it. Our school systems need it. Our kids are longing for it. So it’s high time God’s men get in the game and lead the way when it comes to exposing sin – because we can point to the amazing grace of God that “saved a wretch like me.”

The Gospel is our answer. It’s the good news that leads us back to God, to walk in His ways and live within His boundaries. It’s not bad news that people are beyond repair, unfit to be restored.

But this isn’t politically correct to talk about today – which reveals our cultural hypocrisy. While moral boundaries are labeled “bigoted,” “intolerant” and “patriarchal” on the one hand; on the other, when men breach these “antiquated” boundaries, the radical left goes apoplectic.

The #MeToo movement, as much as it has rightfully exposed sexual abuse and provided a much needed voice for women, has done just enough to expose the sinful fruit of men … yet it rejects the lustful root in the heart. It targets the men transgressing, but not the transgressions of men. Instead of taking a weed-whacker to men and cutting their heads off, why don’t they spray Roundup and target the root – like pornography, sex-sells advertising, silver-screen smut, and “gentlemen’s” clubs. Those should be priority #1 to eliminate from culture – just like cigarettes were back in the 90’s.

For Christians, the Gospel is the Roundup – it takes out the root in the heart and restores the soul of the man.

So how can we spray a little Roundup and help bring restoration to this nation? Step one is a healthy dose of the fear of the Lord.

The fear of the Lord leads men to repent of sexual sin. It grips them from the inside with knowledge that their sexual urges and choices have consequences. This healthy fear causes them to run away from objectifying women and toward protecting them … with absolute purity and love in their heart. It also compels them to confess their secret sins and walk in God’s way, not to hide their sins and do it their own way.

To fear the Lord means to live within the moral boundaries of God. It’s like the fear of heights if you walk too close to the edge of a cliff – it leads you away from danger and toward safety. This type of fear is healthy and healing, and it’s this fear that can bring restoration.

“The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” – Proverbs 19:23

If men truly want to stay out of trouble, then we all need to stay within God’s moral boundaries. And when/if we transgress His boundaries, we must confess to those who can help bring healing and get back inside them. This has been the case in our lives and in the life of every man we’ve known – because we’ve all sinned and fallen out of bounds at some point, but the fear of the Lord leads us to confess and forsake.

“He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them finds compassion.” – Proverbs 28:13

King David was the biggest sinner of all, and yet the amazing grace of God worked like Roundup in his heart to root out the weeds of sin, bringing restoration to his soul. So if we want restoration today and not destruction, we need to heed these timely words:

“When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’; and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah. Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found. …” – Psalm 32:3-6a
