THE COMING SIGNS OF OUR TIMES: THE OPENING OF THE SIXTH SEAL

“I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.” – Revelation 6:12

This will be the third installment of my 14-week series on the Book of Revelation. For those who haven’t read the first two articles, I’ve shared previews from my latest book in “The Signs of Our Times” series, THE COMING SIGNS OF OUR TIMES: A Guide for Those Who Are Left Behind in the Generation of Tribulation. I’ve explained what occurs after the Rapture of the Church prior to the seven-year Tribulation, and how the Tribulation period began with the release of the Four Horsemen.

This week, I’m going to focus on the Sixth Seal being broken – which will bring forth unprecedented calamities upon the earth. Last week, I explained that Lord Jesus breaks open each of the Seven Seals, and that the first four unleashed the horsemen. The Fifth Seal, which you can read about in the Chapter of my book that I’ll be sharing the preview from today, causes the prayers of the martyrs and every persecuted Christian in history to come before God’s throne. The Sixth Seal being broken, and every judgment that follows thereafter, will be God’s long-awaited answer to their prayers.

The next seal to be opened is the sixth, and it will unleash the first of three great earthquakes that will shake the world during the Tribulation. It will be followed by a cosmic upheaval the likes of which the world has never experienced –

“I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and great men, rich men, chief captains, mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.” – Revelation 6:12-16

While the judgments of God unleashed up to this point have gotten the attention of the inhabitants of the earth, to say the least, the events brought forth through the opening of the sixth seal will have mankind running and hiding in fear. A great earthquake will kick off a series of earth-altering and space-altering catastrophes. The quake, and calamities that follow, will be unprecedented; and will fulfill age-old prophecies heralding “the Day of the Lord.”

“I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come. It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered.” – Joel 2:30-32 & Acts 2:20

This earthquake, and the two that will occur during the Great Tribulation will make all of the other quakes throughout history look like minor temblors. To paint a picture for you, all quakes up until this point have been like 20-foot waves of the ocean rolling ashore onto a beach; while the great earthquakes of Revelation, in comparison, will be like 2,000-foot tsunamis which engulf every visible thing in their path.

Next, the sun will be darkened and the moon will become as blood. The longest possible duration of a total solar eclipse is just over 7 and a half minutes. This black sun will have no time-limit. Until the event actually takes place, there is no way of telling how long it will last. And I am sure that everyone has been fascinated with blood moons whenever they rise in the night sky; but as with the earthquake and sun, this blood-red moon will be exceptional. Most blood moons that I’ve witnessed appear as a dark orange or even tan color, but the Tribulation moon will be the unmistakable color of blood red. So much so, that the inhabitants of earth will tremble with great fear.

The fear that grips the earth will only increase more and more throughout the course of the cosmic chaos that will occur. Verse 13 says that the stars of heaven will fall unto the earth. The stars will most likely be meteorites, asteroids, or comets. Any of these striking Earth can do irreparable damage. If a literal “star” were to ever fall and strike the earth, our planet would most likely be vaporized, and all life would be wiped out. Since we know from reading further in the Book of Revelation that God still has plans for Earth, I believe the falling stars prophesied will be of the three that I have mentioned.
