“A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” – Proverbs 12:10
“Ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” – Job 12:7-10
ABC News reports: A commercial poultry farm named Crescent Duck Farm, located in Aquebogue on Long Island in New York, is facing a devastating situation as health officials have uncovered several cases of bird flu among its flock.
This farm, and last remaining commercial duck farm on Long Island, has been forced into a severe response to the outbreak.
According to reports from the Suffolk County Department of Health, the owner of the farm noticed symptoms indicating that his flock was unwell just last week.
Following this initial observation, health authorities conducted tests to confirm the presence of bird flu on January 17.
In light of the confirmed outbreak, the farm is now required to halt all of its operations and has commenced the heartbreaking process of having to euthanize its entire flock of more than 100,000 ducks.
The euthanasia process is expected to last slightly more than a week, which reflects the scale of the operation that is needed to ensure biosecurity and to prevent the further spread of the virus.
Suffolk County Health Commissioner, Dr. Gregson Pigott, emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, “Unfortunately, when you have a situation like this where you have a flock that’s infected, the only remedy is to put the entire flock down.”
(Many would argue, especially myself, that there are other remedies that could preserve the lives of thousands upon thousands of the ducks. The remedy that was chosen was the fastest and easiest way in the eyes of officials, and not the right or humane way. Shame on anyone behind the decision to overkill the ducks in the name of “public safety”. If there was ever an example of animal cruelty, this most definitely fits the bill! No pun intended either. This sickens me.)
The decision to euthanize the ducks arose from “the need to contain an outbreak and safeguard animal health and public safety”… (Continue reading)
