“The fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.” – Revelation 9:1-2
In this 6th installment of the 14-week series on Revelation, I will be teaching on the fifth trumpet and what it brings. In case you have not yet read the first five installments, I have covered events occurring just prior to and immediately following the Rapture – Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse – the 6th Seal – Identity of the 144,000 sealed servants of God – and the third and fourth trumpets. This week’s teaching, like the rest, comes from my book, THE COMING SIGNS OF OUR TIMES.
Upon the sounding of the fifth trumpet, “a star” will fall from heaven and demonic locusts will be released from the bottomless pit (abyss). This preview is from the chapter of my book titled, “Fifth and Sixth Trumpets”…
As the fifth angel sounds his trumpet, another star will fall from heaven, but this star isn’t like the literal heavenly bodies that recently fell to the earth. This star’s referred to as “him” and “he,” so we know that this is an angel. There are generally two theories for the identity of this particular angel. One: It is a high-ranking angel who’s given authority to open the bottomless pit (abyss), so that torment of the wicked can begin and hopefully lead them to repentance. Two: It’s Lucifer (Satan), or even another fallen angel (demon). I am not too dogmatic one way or the other, because the arguments presented for both theories make a lot of sense.
The compelling reason that some Biblical scholars give as to why it will be a faithful angel of the LORD, as opposed to Satan, is that Revelation 20:1-3 shows a holy angel in possession of the pit’s key. It will be used to bind Satan, and cast him into the pit. Obviously, if Lucifer were to be given the key of the same pit in Chapter 9, it wouldn’t make much sense that he would later bind and cast himself into the abyss. The only way it could be Satan who is given the key, at the sounding of the fifth trumpet, is if it is only given to him for a short season – and then given to another angel later on, at the conclusion of the Great Tribulation.
While the reason for it not being Satan was convincing and backed up scripturally, so too are reasons why it very well could be old Lucifer who will be given the key. The first reason is that he’s described in the Bible as falling from Heaven (Isaiah 14:12, Ezekiel 28:17, Luke 10:18 & Revelation 12:7-9). Another reason is that the abyss is opened to release fallen angels (demons) who have been bound there for millennia (2nd Peter 2:4 and Jude 6), so it’d make sense their leader would be the one to release them.
I do not think that the identity of this particular angel is too important though, because the fifth trumpet judgment is primarily about what will be released from the opened pit – not the one who is doing the opening of it. And what he releases from that abyss should send shivers down the spine of every unbeliever. When he opens it, smoke arises out of it – “as the smoke of a great furnace” – and causes great darkness to come upon the earth. One-third of the sun had already been darkened as a result of the last trumpet blast, and now it will be virtually blotted out.
“And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.” – Revelation 9:3-6
These are no ordinary locusts being described here for many reasons. They’ll be an innumerable army of demons, who’ll come forth out of the abyss like a swarm of locusts, and will be allowed to torment sinners with great pain for five straight months. Five months is the lifespan of actual locusts. Unlike real locusts, they will not touch any vegetation on Earth. They will also not touch the 144,000 evangelists who bear God’s seal in their foreheads. I believe that Christians in the Tribulation, who were saved by their preaching, will also receive Divine protection from these demons; because the locusts are God’s judgment. The LORD’s judgments target unbelievers to lead them to repentance. Christians will only be harmed or martyred by the world (Antichrist’s regime).
The torment which unbelievers on Earth experience, because of these demon locusts, will be similar to the pain of a scorpion’s sting. The victim of a venomous sting from a scorpion will often roll on the ground in agony and foam at the mouth. On top of this, even if men attempt suicide, they will not be able to die. If they refuse to repent, then God will see to it that they suffer through the full duration of this torturous judgment.
That will do it for this week’s installment. I speak much more about these locusts, and the descriptions of them that John gives, in my book. “And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. They had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.” – Revelation 9:7-10
