Lost in all of the Hurricane Harvey headlines dominating the news this week was a significant document being signed by nearly 200 Christian leaders, and the backlash that it received on social media. The document is known as the “Nashville Statement”, and it contains 14 Articles of Biblical beliefs for affirmation. A large coalition of well-known Christian Pastors and leaders signed their names to the Statement, which was put together by The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.
The reason the document is deemed “controversial” in the liberal mainstream media is because it affirms in writing what the Holy Bible teaches about sexuality, Gay Marriage, and transgenderism. The Statement is not controversial at all to anyone who has actually ever read their Bible, but because it goes against mainstream popular opinion in 2017, the internet lit up with swift condemnation of the document and men who signed it.
I myself rushed to add my name to the Statement as soon as I learned what it was all about. I believe that all Christian leaders, especially those of influence, need to add their names to the list and endorse all that the document affirms. The “Preamble” of the Statement correctly identifies why something like this is so desperately needed today, in a nation full of backslidden and Biblically-hostile “CHRISTIANS”. Yes, believe it or not and as sad as it may sound, many so-called believers today don’t just disagree with God’s Word… they HATE IT. Many who attacked the Nashville Statement, and its signatories, were supposedly “Christians” themselves.
The Preamble states that “the secular spirit of our age presents a great challenge to the Christian church. Will the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ (believers) lose her biblical conviction, clarity, and courage, and blend into the spirit of the age? Or will she hold fast to the Word of Life, draw courage from Jesus, and unashamedly proclaim HIS Way as the Way of Life? Will the Church maintain her clear, counter-cultural witness to a world that seems bent on ruin?”
Instead of sparking a fire in believers to take a stand for our Lord’s Word of Truth (as it should), the Statement instead angered that “secular spirit” which possesses countless believers today. Some of the most mean-spirited and Biblically-ignorant responses which the Nashville Statement and its signees received on Twitter were –
“I’m tired of the assertion that because something is Christian-themed it has innate authority. It does not. #NashvilleStatement”
“Just catching up on the #NashvilleStatement and wondering if someone might please tell me what year this is. Or what century. Thanks.”
“The #NashvilleStatement is a vile, hateful, and deeply unchristian piece of trash.”
“If your pastor signs the #NashvilleStatement, #EmptyThePews.”
“Christians reject #NashvilleStatement’s hateful theology.”
“The God I know does not support it.”
“The Nashville Statement is a shameful document that is antithetical to true Christianity and the teachings of Jesus.”
Now before I share the Statement itself, which is completely rooted in God’s Word, and is simply an affirmation of what the Holy Bible teaches, I have to respond to these trolls above (especially those who call themselves “Christian”). First, to the “Christian-themed” tweet. The statement is NOT “themed”, it is 100% Biblically CHRISTIAN. That means that since it is the infallible Word of Almighty God, it has supreme AUTHORITY. If you question the authority of teachings from the Holy Bible, whether you believe them to be relevant to this generation or not, you are questioning the Authority of God Himself.
To the “what Year or what Century” tweet, I say it’s 2017 and the Holy Bible’s relevance has not changed. God’s Word is just as valid today as it was 6,000 years ago. The Holy Bible has never changed over the centuries, or “evolved” to suit popular opinion, and God doesn’t intend for it to be changed in our generation. So if God’s Word and Laws don’t have a place in “your Year” or “your Century”, then I don’t want to live in “your world”.
To the tweeter who called the Statement a “vile, hateful, unChristian piece of trash”, it sounds to me like they are the vile and hateful one here. Also, how can a document which affirms what the Christian Holy Book teaches be “unChristian”? People need to be very careful to read the Statement before making comments like that, because it is predominantly word-for-word what God says. So when you call the statement a “piece of trash”, you are actually calling the Holy Bible a piece of trash, and I would not want to be in your shoes doing that.
What’s most disappointing, and just highlighting the reason why the Statement was needed in the first place, is the tweet trend of “#EmptyThePews”. Basically, many people on Twitter were calling for Christians to leave their Churches if their Pastor is preaching anything contained in the Statement. Again, they are basically telling believers to stop attending Churches that teach you what God’s Word actually SAYS about today’s hot-button issues.
Today’s generation doesn’t have a problem with the Nashville Statement or with its signees, this generation actually has a problem with GOD and His Word of Truth. That is abundantly clear. There was another popular trending tweet that “Christians reject the Nashville Statement’s hateful ideology”. Once again, I reiterate, if a Christian rejects the ideology of the Statement (which is based wholly on God’s Word) then that Christian rejects the Holy Book on which their Faith rests.
Why call yourself “Christian” if you won’t believe the Book that made you a Christian?? I’m gonna need to tweet that “Christians who reject the Nashville Statement’s Biblical ideology ARE NOT CHRISTIANS”. Then we have the tweet, and many like it, “the God I know doesn’t support it”. I hear this often on social media. “MY God” or “the Jesus I know” doesn’t support this. People always use this response when Christians like me take a Biblical stand on social issues like homosexuality, abortion, or against Islam.
If YOUR God and the Jesus YOU KNOW do not support the words that THEY WROTE in our Holy Bibles, then you are serving a false god and an impostor Jesus. Period. How in the world can people today say that God and Lord Jesus oppose something that THEY themself taught us. Finally, as to the tweet that said the Nashville Statement was “antithetical” to true Christianity and the teachings of Jesus… How can the Statement be opposed to something it is wholly based upon? Every Article of the Statement affirms something that Jesus Christ taught in the Holy Bible, which is what I assume we can safely call “true Christianity”.
Seems to me that a lot of Christians today desire a hippie make-believe Jesus without His actual words and teachings. Even though our Lord spoke thousands upon thousands of words in the Holy Bible, most liberal Christians like this previous tweeter could probably only quote “Judge not” and “Love your neighbor”. That is why they get all angry when you quote anything Jesus said about today’s social issues. They don’t wanna hear it. “Not MY Jesus” they say. To them I say, in what book can I find YOUR Jesus? ‘Cause He’s not in MINE!
After all of the anti-Nashville Statement tweets I found, I finally came across a few in support of it. I think many Christians have not been endorsing or supporting it because they’re afraid of the liberal mob attack that would follow. Out of the few that I did find tweeting “support’, the Christian Conservative writer Matt Walsh’s tweet was the perfect response to all of the tweets I addressed above.
“Note to non-Christians: stop telling us what our religion does and does not teach.” – Matt Walsh
AMEN brother. They don’t know what our Faith really teaches, because they won’t pick up the only Book on planet earth that matters. They are allergic to the Holy Bible. They don’t want to find out that God says their opinions and beliefs are WRONG. Thus, they love to tell us what our Faith SHOULD be, or what it ISN’T, rather than what it IS, always has been, and always will be. Liberals want us to worship a God without rules, laws and commandments.
“Just love everybody, and try not to love your GOD so much” is the message that they are sending to believers today. I for one will continue to love GOD FIRST, and let everything else fall into place. If I’m hated for it, even by the entire world, so be it. I’d rather love the LORD and be hated by the world, than to love the world and be forgotten by GOD.
Thankfully some bold and faithful Christian leaders feel the same way, and they took a stand on HIS Word by signing the Nashville Statement. Those men include James Dobson, Albert Mohler, John Piper, Thom Rainer, Tony Perkins, and over 175 more and counting, including me. Here are the 14 Articles of the Statement, in their entirety, which are ALL inspired by Biblical Doctrine –
WE AFFIRM that God has designed marriage to be a covenantal, sexual, procreative, lifelong union of one man and one woman, as husband and wife, and is meant to signify the covenant love between Christ and his bride the church.
WE DENY that God has designed marriage to be a homosexual, polygamous, or polyamorous relationship. We also deny that marriage is a mere human contract rather than a covenant made before God.
WE AFFIRM that God’s revealed will for all people is chastity outside of marriage and fidelity within marriage.
WE DENY that any affections, desires, or commitments ever justify sexual intercourse before or outside marriage; nor do they justify any form of sexual immorality.
WE AFFIRM that God created Adam and Eve, the first human beings, in his own image, equal before God as persons, and distinct as male and female.
WE DENY that the divinely ordained differences between male and female render them unequal in dignity or worth.
WE AFFIRM that divinely ordained differences between male and female reflect God’s original creation design and are meant for human good and human flourishing.
WE DENY that such differences are a result of the Fall or are a tragedy to be overcome.
WE AFFIRM that the differences between male and female reproductive structures are integral to God’s design for self-conception as male or female.
WE DENY that physical anomalies or psychological conditions nullify the God-appointed link between biological sex and self-conception as male or female.
WE AFFIRM that those born with a physical disorder of sex development are created in the image of God and have dignity and worth equal to all other image-bearers. They are acknowledged by our Lord Jesus in his words about “eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb.” With all others they are welcome as faithful followers of Jesus Christ and should embrace their biological sex insofar as it may be known.
WE DENY that ambiguities related to a person’s biological sex render one incapable of living a fruitful life in joyful obedience to Christ.
WE AFFIRM that self-conception as male or female should be defined by God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption as revealed in Scripture.
WE DENY that adopting a homosexual or transgender self-conception is consistent with God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption.
WE AFFIRM that people who experience sexual attraction for the same sex may live a rich and fruitful life pleasing to God through faith in Jesus Christ, as they, like all Christians, walk in purity of life.
WE DENY that sexual attraction for the same sex is part of the natural goodness of God’s original creation, or that it puts a person outside the hope of the gospel.
WE AFFIRM that sin distorts sexual desires by directing them away from the marriage covenant and toward sexual immorality— a distortion that includes both heterosexual and homosexual immorality.
WE DENY that an enduring pattern of desire for sexual immorality justifies sexually immoral behavior.
WE AFFIRM that it is sinful to approve of homosexual immorality or transgenderism and that such approval constitutes an essential departure from Christian faithfulness and witness.
WE DENY that the approval of homosexual immorality or transgenderism is a matter of moral indifference about which otherwise faithful Christians should agree to disagree.
WE AFFIRM our duty to speak the truth in love at all times, including when we speak to or about one another as male or female.
WE DENY any obligation to speak in such ways that dishonor God’s design of his image-bearers as male and female.
WE AFFIRM that the grace of God in Christ gives both merciful pardon and transforming power, and that this pardon and power enable a follower of Jesus to put to death sinful desires and to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.
WE DENY that the grace of God in Christ is insufficient to forgive all sexual sins and to give power for holiness to every believer who feels drawn into sexual sin.
WE AFFIRM that the grace of God in Christ enables sinners to forsake transgender self-conceptions and by divine forbearance to accept the God-ordained link between one’s biological sex and one’s self-conception as male or female.
WE DENY that the grace of God in Christ sanctions self-conceptions that are at odds with God’s revealed will.
WE AFFIRM that Christ Jesus has come into the world to save sinners and that through Christ’s death and resurrection forgiveness of sins and eternal life are available to every person who repents of sin and trusts in Christ alone as Savior, Lord, and supreme treasure.
WE DENY that the Lord’s arm is too short to save or that any sinner is beyond his reach.
Every article of the Statement can be backed up with numerous Biblical verses, and signing the Statement is undeniably affirming the Word of God Almighty. Sinful people may not like it, but then again they take issue with many of God’s commands and teachings. So this is nothing new. We believers, Christians and Jews alike, cannot be afraid to believe in and stand for what the Holy Bible says. That is why I signed the Nashville Statement, and I urge all of my brothers and sisters to do so as well.
The “Nashville” title is highly symbolic and meaningful. The very FIRST official Gay Marriage in the United States was licensed in Nashville, Tennessee. No one can say that Jesus didn’t speak against Gay Marriage, though there are many today who claim that He was silent on the issue. He said that “a man shall cleave to his WIFE: and the two shall be ONE flesh” (Matthew 19:5 & Mark 10:7 & Genesis 2:24 & Ephesians 5:31). Also He refers to the Church of believers as His WIFE (Revelation 19:7).
NOT ONCE did Jesus or the Father throughout the pages of the Holy Bible ever mention two men or two women becoming one flesh or marrying each other. Whenever God did mention two humans of the same-sex coming together in an intimate way, it was ALWAYS condemned and labeled sinful, abominable and unnatural (Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:24-32).
This is why the Holy Bible is dubbed by many in today’s society as an “outdated” Book, with archaic laws, that needs to be “revised”. Many liberals say that God needs to “evolve” into the 21st Century, but God is the SAME yesterday, today and FOREVER. If He called something SIN yesterday, it is STILL a sin today. If God called something an abomination 3,000-6,000 years ago, then it is still an abomination TODAY.
He is GOD, so He gets to make the rules, whether this sinful generation likes it or not. So, in order for us believers to follow God’s rules, we can never be concerned about “offending” someone, or “hurting feelings” of those who openly rebel against God. We certainly can’t be concerned with being “politically correct” or “open-minded”. There is no “in the middle” with God.
There is right and wrong. Good and evil. Righteous and wicked. You cannot straddle the fence as a Christian. It is not politically correct, but it is Biblically direct, to say that God is AGAINST Gay Marriage and transgenderism. As the Nashville Statement affirmed, he is just as much against sexual promiscuity and adultery between heterosexuals. So we cannot say we are against one and not the other. We cannot sugarcoat what God is against in order to please the masses, or to be accepted by an immoral society.
God created man, and then He created woman FOR man. If God thought it was ok for Adam to sleep with other men, then God would have just created another man. He didn’t. He created Eve. God also gave the command of marriage, for a husband to take a wife, and to be fruitful and multiply. If a husband took a husband, or a wife took a wife, there would be no “multiplying” going on. God’s Word is Eternal, immutable, unchangeable, and uncompromising. There is no debating it or rewriting it. It is what it is. It is what it always has been.
I, myself, would much rather offend EVERYONE on earth, than to ever be responsible for anyone spending eternity in Hell because of my refusal to tell them the Truth. I don’t care how many sex changes someone like Bruce Jenner has, he will always be Bruce Jenner the MAN to me. While, I certainly don’t mean that he is a “manly man”, he is still a “MALE” in God’s sight.
Everything that is written in the Nashville Statement about transgenderism, homosexuality, sexual promiscuity, adultery, or any other sin is Biblically sound. Any Christian who disagrees, and would not sign their name to affirm God’s Everlasting Truth, is NO CHRISTIAN AT ALL.
