Coptic Crisis Continues: Christian Persecution In Egypt Escalates

On June 17th, a Muslim mob looted and torched Christian homes and property in the village of Al-Beida, after rumors spread that one of the buildings was being converted into a Church. Over 80 Coptic Christian families were affected by the attack, leaving many injured. The Islamic mob destroyed all of the construction materials being used to construct the new Church. They then turned their anger toward the two brothers, Naim and Mousa, who were responsible for construction of the Church, leaving both men beaten and severely injured. After attacking the brothers, the mob began to hurl rocks at nearby Christian homes, looting some, and even setting fire to as much Christian property as they could. Damages are estimated to be around 500,000 Egyptian pounds.

A local Priest, Karas Naser, of the Holy Virgin and the Archangel Michael Coptic Church, was ripped out of his car and attacked when he arrived to intervene and attempt to stop the carnage. When local police finally arrived on the scene, they were unable to protect the Christians from the mob’s brutal assault. The Islamists continued to set homes and cars on fire in the presence of the police. After the muslims had done their damage, police were only able to arrest just 6 Muslim men, all of whom were released just HOURS LATER. Meanwhile, 6 Christian men were also arrested, but not released on bail until the NEXT DAY. The police station in Amirya said that the Christian men were arrested for “erecting a building without permit” and “holding prayers without permission”. It is also important to note that the police officers, who did such a poor job in intervening, were also Muslims.

As if that news weren’t bad enough, there has been a recent wave of kidnappings in Egypt as Christian women and young girls are being abducted and FORCED into Muslim marriages. The Christian girls, some as young as 16 years old, are being snatched from their homes, schools, and public sidewalks by Muslim men who then forcibly take them as wives. The families of the girls have begged police authorities for help, but to no avail. There have been 7 recent cases of these kidnappings. Most recently an 18 year old, Mary Wahib, was taken at gunpoint from her home by four masked men. 2 months ago, on April 11th, a 17 year old was grabbed off the street while returning home from a friend’s house.

These crimes have been quietly taking place under the radar in Egypt for nearly 50 years, since the 1970s, when then President Anwar Sadat introduced a more fundamentalist Islamic ideology in Egypt. In the province of Qena, there were nearly 75 reported kidnappings, and reports of violence against Coptic Christians from 2011 to 2014. Also, since most of the police force and authorities investigating the crimes are Muslims, virtually none of the missing girls have ever been returned to their families.

This all comes after I reported 3 weeks ago on the Muslim mob in Cairo, Egypt, who stripped an elderly Christian woman and paraded her naked on the streets. This happened during the attack in which they looted and torched 7 Christian homes. The assault came after rumors had spread that the old woman’s Christian son had sexual relations with a Muslim woman. In Islam, it’s okay for Muslim men to have intimate relations with Christian women, but NOT okay for their Muslim women to have relations with Christian men. Isn’t that real convenient.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recommended last month that the US State Department add Egypt to it’s list of “countries of particular concern”, where “particularly severe violations of religious freedom are perpetuated or tolerated”. Though, of course, the Obama Administration has still not added Islamic Egypt to that list. God forbid he offend anyone in his beloved Muslim faith.

I said in my last article on this subject, “Coptic Crisis”, that Egypt is portrayed by many in the media as one of the most “moderate” Islamic nations. On paper, after a 2014 “absolute freedom of religion guarantee” in Egypt’s new constitution, you’d think that they were moderate compared to most every other Islamic nation. Yet, at the same time, the constitution decrees Islam to be the STATE RELIGION, just like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the rest do, and that means that conversion to any religion but Islam is PROHIBITED. Blasphemy against the Quran and Islam’s prophet Muhammed is also punishable with severe penalties.

So, sadly, our Christian brothers and sisters will remain in dire straits until America and the rest of the world speaks out against Egypt’s atrocities. What’s worse, I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon, if at all. Pray for our Coptic Christian brothers and sisters, because our prayers may be the only help they will get.
